The Nordic Council will adopt a common e-ID system

  • 2017-11-30 14:10:26

The Nordic e-ID is a mutual authentication between the five Nordic countries (Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland) and can be used as a common key in the five countries to validate identity when working transnationally, studying abroad and opening bank accounts .

On 2 September, the Nordic Council adopted a resolution that accepted the proposal of the center caucus of the Council to adopt the common electronic identity card system in the Nordic region.

Founded in 1962, the Nordic Council is a co-operative body among the parliaments of the five Nordic countries. In 2017, Finland held the rotating presidency of the Nordic Council.

Anna-Maya Henriksson, a member of the Nordic Council's middle caucus and chairman of Finland's Swede, said the Nordic e-ID system will have a significant impact on many in the region, living, working and studying anywhere in the region And carry out business activities will be more convenient.

The Nordic electronic identity card must be associated with personally identifiable information registered by the resident in the public sector of the country. Henriksson said: "It is like a key. If you do not have a citizen's registration number in your country of residence, you can not open the door."

Henriksson admits that the use of this e-ID will take some time, but it is not yet possible to give a specific timetable, but she hopes it will not take too long.

The proposal for a Nordic e-ID card was first proposed by the Nordic Council's middle caucus in October 2015. In January 2017, the Governing Council rejected the proposal to establish a common social security number system and considered the common e-ID as more economical and convenient.

The Nordic countries have long been involved in promoting regional integration. At present, residents living in the Nordic countries are free to choose their place of residence, but after they move to another country, they must re-apply for a local social security number to handle banking and telecommunications accounts.
